Elder Caretaking Daily Stresses

by Susan
(NY, New York)

Elder Care on a daily basis stresses me out. The unknown of what the needs may be are really taking a toll. From fearing for Dad's safety, falling and the like, to caring for my own family and being pulled in two different directions at once is very confusing sometimes.

Just setting priorities is a big deal as my son needs to go to band practice, Dad has an appointment with his doctor and having to juggle such errands and not take too much time off from work increases my stress and worry time sometimes through the roof. I don't even want to think about nights and weekends....

If anyone has suggestions about how to lessen the burden, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks

Elder Caretaking - How much "Social Security" help are you getting, Susan?
by: Laraine

Do you qualify for help from the social security people? If our governments expect us to care for elderly family members they need to give us all the help they can or we will land up costing them for our own broken-down health.

Find out what you are entitled to and take every bit of it. For instance, are you entitled to some "day care" for your father? I don't know where you would go to find out what you are entitled to (apart from the social security people themselves).

In New Zealand people who don't know where to find help (for almost anything) can go running to an organisation called Citizens' Advice Bureau. Do you have anything similar?
