DIY Crafts for Seniors

Now let me tell you, my dad can be quite stubborn. After he experienced some mobility and speech difficulties following a stroke, he became withdrawn.

I knew he felt like he was useless, and nothing I could say could assuage him. Then, one day while in the hobby store and kind of looking for easy craft ideas, I picked up a birdhouse building kit.

It didn't require any major tools and was not crafts for the elderly but actually designed for kids, but when I gave it to my dad, his eyes lit up and he expressed a desire to put it together for my young son. Well, that was just the beginning. Now, my dad loves his hobby.

What makes it even more meaningful for him is that he takes his bird houses to the craft fairs and sells them. Because he's financially stable, he doesn't keep the money for himself, but donates it to local charities.

The joy he gets not only from staying busy building and constructing the bird houses, but knowing that he's doing something good for someone else has brought the sparkle back in his eyes.

Do-it-yourself crafts are especially suited to men who like to work with their hands and still have the dexterity to work with wood, leather, or paints.

Keep in mind that you may need to experiment a bit, but talk to your dad and encourage him to stay actively engaged with crafts that enhance dexterity and incorporate as many other senses as possible - not only for physical well-being, but for mental and emotional well-being. It worked for me...

Easy Craft Ideas for Dad
by: Anonymous

This is encouraging. Following his heart attack, my dad doesn't want to do much of anything, but this is giving me some ideas.

He was always into sports, so maybe I can come up with some ideas that will perk his interest again.

Thanks for the good encouragement!

DIY Crafts for Elderly Dad
by: Jo

My dad used to be an avid fisherman, but can't get out much anymore. He still likes to make fishing lures though, and like your dad, sells them from time to time.

They keep him busy, give him pleasure, and now he's even teaching some neighbors how to make them. He's happier, calmer, and more engaged.
